Josh grew up in Colfax, IA where he was very active in athletics. Football, Wrestling, Track, and Baseball kept him busy throughout his high school career. During Josh’s senior year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve, attending basic training and advanced individual training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Josh was deployed twice between 2003-2007, both times serving in Iraq. Once settled back down, stateside, Josh was employed by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, where he met his beautiful wife, Julie. Josh and Julie attended their CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in Omaha, NE, and their CrossFit SPEAR certification in Denver, CO. In Sep. 2016, paperwork became official and Cornfed CrossFit was born, a couple months after their child was born. Josh resigned from the sheriff’s office, Feb. 2017 and now serves as Head Coach and works at Cornfed CrossFit full-time. In December, 2018, Josh went to CrossFit St. Louis Park, MN and received his CrossFit Level 2 Trainer.
Why I CrossFit: I started CrossFitting to get back in shape, and to have something I could do with my wife on regular basis. Once we started, I loved it and couldn’t get enough. We started to do some competitions and get more involved with CrossFit Pella, where it all started. After getting our Level 1 Trainer certificates, I knew I wanted to coach and to help people on their fitness journey. I enjoy being able to help “ordinary” people achieve things they never thought they could. And it’s still something I can do with my wife, and teach our child how to be healthy and strong!

Julie was raised on a farm just outside of Newton and during high school, she played softball and was a swim team manager. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and after graduation, Julie was hired as a Police Officer for the Newton Police Department. She currently serves as the School Resource Officer for all of the Newton Community School District schools. She and Josh were married in 2013, and welcomed their child in 2016 and their second one in 2019. One of her favorite parts of CrossFit, is seeing the athletes’ children being physically active because they are modeling after their parents.
Why I CrossFit: For my health and to get stronger. We started at CrossFit Pella and fell in love immediately. Previously, I had a free gym I could use anytime, but easily got bored doing the three same movements by myself. When we found CrossFit, we found an amazing community along with it that kept us accountable and motivated. Also, having that “date” time I can spend with my husband during a workout.

Nate grew up on a farm north of Story City and played football, baseball, and wrestled in high school. He started doing CrossFit on his own in January of 2014 and joined Cornfed CrossFit in January of 2017. Nate passed the Level 1 Trainer test and received his CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate in March of 2017. He works as Configuration Control Analyst at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown.
Why I CrossFit: I like the competitive aspect of it. I’m a highly competitive person so having others to compete against makes me push myself harder than I would if I was working out alone. Putting forth that extra effort ultimately makes me a fitter, healthier person.
Favorite CrossFit movement: Burpees. I know, but they’re really not that bad
Least favorite movement: Thrusters are the bane of my existence

In 2015, Billy attended DMACC in Ames and obtained his K-12 coaching certification and that following fall he took over the Lynnville-Sully middle school wrestling program and assisted with the high school wrestling program. Billy started CrossFit with his wife, Francesca, in February of 2017 at Cornfed CrossFit. In 2018, Billy attended his CrossFit level 1 training course in St. Louis, MO.
Why I CrossFit: I started CrossFit to get fit with my wife. After starting CrossFit, I fell in love with the aspect that you can always improve whether it be time or weight, there’s no set variable you can’t improve on. I like CrossFit because it’s you against yourself, which reminds a lot of wrestling as you push yourself to beat your last score on workouts. Then there’s the competition side of it; I like be able to go out and compete along side my new friends and just have fun.

Why I CrossFit: I love the physical and mental challenge. It gives me a place to enrich my personal life as a Mother and caregiver as well as time to focus on me. Additionally, it gives me the strength and stamina I need to participate in all of the activities my family loves. From hiking and biking to water and snow skiing, CrossFit lays the foundation to do all these things and more. Having a community like CrossFit offers is like having a strong and positive family to lean on nearly everywhere in the world.
